Our Story

Team South Wales is a volleyball club comprised of one performance focused female adult team.

The club was formed in 2009 by a group of experienced players with aspirations to compete at a high level.

The adult squad has since turned into a highly successful volleyball team competing across the UK,

including the prestigious Volleyball England (VE) National Volleyball League (NVL), and the VE National Cup.

2009-2014

League and Tournament Wins: South West Volleyball Association League, Cardiff Open (3 times), Regional Championships Trophy, NVL Division 3, VE National Shield, NVL Division 1.
Promotions and Cup Runs: Promoted to Super 8s, reached the semi-final of Volleyball England’s National Cup.

2014-2018
Super 8s and National Success: Maintained Super 8s position, highest finish 6th, consistent top 4 in National Division 1.
Youth and Coaching Achievements: Junior squad represented Wales in European Championships, Head coach won Performance Development Coach of the Year, Junior squad won Welsh League, junior players selected for GB national teams.

2019-Present
Beach Volleyball Representation: Adult and assistant coaches representing Wales in national 4-star beach volleyball tournaments.

Current Performance: Maintaining National Division 2 position, top 3 in current season.

June 2009: the decision is made and a new club is about to exist, lead by Carly Stewart.

September/October 2009: Team South Wales enters the South West League. We also enter the Cardiff Open 2009 for the first time and become Champions.

End of 2009/2010 season: We become National Shield Runners Up after an exciting final at the Crystal Palace in London. More importantly, Team South Wales is South West League winner! As so, we went through play the Regional Trophy and also win it!

September 2011/2012: As we enter the NVL's Div. 2, we obtain CM Utilities (our former main sponsor) and S.M.A.R.T recovery support, which allowed us to secure great training conditions! A great number of new experienced players join the team.

End of 2011/2012 season: TSW wins NVL's Div. 2 and is consequently promoted to Div. 1. In addition, we become National Shield Champions, after beating Newforest in the final at Kettering Volleyball Center.

September 2013/2014: TSW starts its journey in the Super 8's division, yet again with the support of CM Utilities. More international players join the team.

September 2013/2014: For the first time ever TSW gets a second team formed: a Junior Squad! We began this new adventure by creating a Junior development project that intends to follow the same sport values and training philosophy as the adult team, whilst adjusting the sessions to the players' age and level.

September 2014/2015: After a successful result at the end-of-season playoff, TSW adults start a new season in the Super 8's division with the support of our faithful donor, CM Utilities. More national and international players join the team.

End of 2014/2015 season: TSW's adult squad makes history again by achieving the club's and any Welsh team's best result ever: 6th position in the Super 8's division table.

September 2021/2022: The NVL season is reinstated and training is started again. Miguel Nieto joins Manuel Santos as assistant trainer-coach. Connections tighten with the Cardiff University Ladies 1 team because of cross-pollination.

January 2022: Jose Castro rejoins trainer-coach alongside Miguel Nieto.

End of 2021/2022 season: We unfortunately lose quite a lot of players over the course of the season, and in combination with injuries and illness, the team struggles and has to play the relegation matches. In 10 sets, TSW win from MK City and Southampton Ladies 1 and stays in Div 1!

September 2021/2022: We start collaborations with a women's refugee association and reprofiles itself as actively LGBTQ+ friendly with Wales-based collectives.

End of 2021/2022 season: We fight hard and give everything in the games, but struggle to bring the wins. Although we struggling with player and coach injuries, illness, and capacity issues, we hold strong with our core team. By one point, we come 11th in the league and unfortunately have the play the play-offs against relegation. In two matches pushing ourselves to the max, we win both in 5 sets, so we manange to stay in Div 1.

September 2023/2024: We start with a small squad and new coach Nick Gray, adamant to bags enough wins to go back up. We start out really well and barely leave any games behind.

End of 2023/2024: We have won so many games but come second in the league regardless. Just when we need it most, we are not allowed to play the play-offs for promotion and have to stay in Div 2 for another year. The team holds trials for the first time and prepares for the new season with an excellent player base. Longterm captain Marinka van Bergen has taken a time-out for the birth of her baby girl.
In the meantime, we have applied to start a men's team for the first time in the club's history. We are so excited to see the team start its journey upward in the South West Volleyball League!

September 2024/2025: The women's team started with a large squad with lots of new players, and new coach Aleks Borisov, who also captains the men's team.
The men's team has started up strong with a great player base consisting of local players and experienced students from abroad. We can't wait to see what the future brings for both teams!

End of 2024/2025 season: The women’s team, under new coach Aleks Borisov, came together as a strong, motivated squad—with a mix of returning players and fresh talent. Their hard work and consistency paid off as they battled through the season to secure a well-earned promotion back to Division 1. The men’s team made an unforgettable debut in the South West Volleyball League. With a solid foundation of local athletes and international experience, they quickly found their rhythm and dominated the league—finishing their very first season as champions. We couldn’t be prouder of both teams and the incredible progress made this year. The future looks brighter than ever for South Wales Volleyball Club!
